I love drinking coffee, how many cups a day is safe?
For most healthy adults, consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day is generally considered safe. That translates to about 3 to 4 standard cups of coffee per day. However, “safe” can vary quite a bit from person to person based on a few factors:
  • Individual Sensitivity: Some people process caffeine quickly, while others are very sensitive to it. If you notice jitteriness, anxiety, a racing heart, or trouble sleeping, you might want to scale back.
  • Cup Size & Strength: A standard “cup” is measured at around 8 ounces (240 ml). Large mugs, double shots of espresso, or cold brews can easily pack double the caffeine of a basic drip coffee.
  • Health Status & Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the recommended limit drops to 200 mg per day (about 2 cups). Certain medical conditions, like high blood pressure or insomnia, may also require a lower limit.
A good rule of thumb is to listen to your body and try to avoid drinking coffee in the late afternoon or evening so it doesn’t mess with your sleep!
