(Atatürk) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?
06-09-2026
On 6 September 1955 a report circulated that a bomb had exploded near the house in Thessaloniki where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born. The story appeared in radio bulletins and was given prominent treatment in certain newspapers, which printed extra editions that reached a far larger audience than usual. The news immediately produced large street gatherings in Istanbul and other cities. What began as protests quickly turned into widespread attacks on properties belonging to Greek, Armenian and Jewish communities. Thousands of homes, shops, churches and schools were damaged or destroyed over the following night and day. Martial law was declared in several cities. The incident has been remembered every year since as a dark chapter in the republic’s history. Because the spark was the claimed assault on Atatürk’s birthplace, the anniversary naturally brings his name back into public conversation. On social media the date therefore produces a surge of posts that mix historical recollection, photographs of the house, quotations from Atatürk, and debate about the events of 1955 and their meaning today. That combination of commemoration and controversy is what has made the name prominent on social platforms this 6 September.
