A small boat carrying around 140 people was intercepted heading toward the Hampshire coast near Eastney Beach in Portsmouth. Coastguard assets including lifeboats, a helicopter and an aircraft responded, and those on board were brought ashore. They were then due to be taken by coach to a processing site in Kent.This was widely reported as the first arrival of this scale in the city. Videos of people being ferried to shore and of coaches waiting nearby spread quickly. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the area during the evening, blocking roads and attempting to prevent the coaches from leaving. Some wore dark clothing similar to groups seen at a related protest in Dover the previous day. Police were present in numbers, with reports of roads closed and crowds remaining on site into the night.The event drew attention because it occurred farther west than typical Channel crossings and because of the size of the gathering that followed.
