(Spinelli) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?
09-09-2026
Claudio Spinelli, an Argentine forward who joined Vasco da Gama at the start of 2026 after a strong scoring season in Ecuador, has become the focus of intense fan frustration following the team’s 0-0 draw away to Independiente Santa Fe in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals on 8 September.During the match he created one of Vasco’s clearest opportunities: he nutmegged a defender, advanced into a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper and then finished poorly. Official highlights of that moment circulated immediately after the game and triggered a wave of criticism from supporters. Many called his overall contribution insufficient, questioned his place in the starting line-up and suggested he should be dropped or even transferred. The reaction is part of a longer pattern. Spinelli arrived with high expectations after scoring 28 goals the previous year, yet his output in Brazil has been modest and several earlier missed chances had already drawn complaints. The latest wasted opportunity, coming in a tight knockout tie that now heads to a return match in Rio, amplified those existing doubts and turned his name into the dominant talking point among Vasco fans overnight.
