Mandatory evacuation orders in Long Beach were lifted after building officials inspected coastal properties damaged by high surf and powerful waves.According to Long Beach Fire Capt. Jack Crabtree, no homes were red-tagged (deemed entirely uninhabitable), though one structure was yellow-tagged. All remaining properties were ruled safe for entry, allowing residents to return. The evacuation orders were originally issued for about 20 coastal homes after massive waves compromised sections of the seawall and cracked concrete around nearby residences. The dangerous surf was driven by Hurricane Marie moving through the Pacific Ocean, which sent powerful swells into Southern California coastal areas over Labor Day weekend.Emergency overnight repairs to the seawall held successfully and helped protect the area from further erosion. While cleanup operations continue, the boardwalk between 63rd Place and 68th Place remains closed to the public, though the nearby Claremont parking lot has reopened. Officials have urged people to stay away from the active work zones and closed sections.
