Earl Bernhardt, the co-founder of the iconic French Quarter bar Tropical Isle and co-creator of New Orleans’ world-famous “Hand Grenade” cocktail, passed away at the age of 80 from natural causes.Bernhardt founded Tropical Isle in late 1984 alongside his long-time business partner, Pam Fortner, following their concession work at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Together, they developed the potent, melon-flavored Hand Grenade, famously served in tall, translucent green yard glasses shaped like grenades at the base. Marketed with the tagline “New Orleans’ Most Powerful Drink,” the cocktail grew into one of the city’s signature French Quarter attractions and became a heavily protected trademark.Beyond building a nightlife brand that expanded to several locations along Bourbon Street and beyond, Bernhardt was an active supporter of the French Quarter community, a founding member of the French Quarter Alliance, and well known locally for his eccentric, memorable television commercials.
