According to the report from Fox News and statements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):
- The Incident: A 38-year-old California woman named Shalini Thakur was fatally shot in the head outside a Panera Bread in Sacramento County. The suspect, identified as Rohit Rohit, approached her near her car, chased her as she attempted to run away, shot her, and then fled the scene in a vehicle. When responding police officers caught up to him, Rohit died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
- History of Stalking: Thakur had reportedly known Rohit as a DoorDash delivery driver who had stalked and harassed her for months. The behavior included parking outside her home for hours, placing an Apple AirTag under the hood of her vehicle, obtaining a copy of her apartment key to enter while she slept, deflating her car tires to stage rescue attempts, and threatening violence against her and others. Although Thakur had secured a restraining order against him in May, he reportedly continued the stalking behavior.
- Immigration Status and DHS Statements: According to DHS officials, Rohit was an undocumented immigrant from India who entered the United States through Arizona in August 2023. He was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol and subsequently released into the country with a scheduled court date. DHS representatives criticized previous federal release policies and California’s sanctuary laws following the incident, stating the tragedy could have been prevented had he not been released.
