North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan) on the morning of September 12, 2026. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the projectiles traveled approximately 250 kilometers. The launch came directly after the conclusion of “Freedom Edge,” a five-day trilateral military exercise conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan in international waters near Jeju Island. Pyongyang had condemned the drills earlier in the week, with Defence Minister Kim Song Gi warning of countermeasures.Earlier in the week, on September 6, Kim Jong Un presided over the commissioning ceremony in Wonsan for the Kang Kon, the navy’s second 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class guided-missile destroyer. State media reported that the vessel is integrated into North Korea’s maritime nuclear response system. During the event, Kim announced ongoing plans to expand naval facilities on the east coast and commission larger naval warships over the coming months.
