A 15-year-old boy was miraculously rescued after clinging to the hull of an overturned 18-foot fishing boat for roughly two days in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea off Alaska. LiveNOW from FOXWhat Happened: The teenager had set out on a fishing trip with his older brother and cousin, leaving from the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island. While at sea, the vessel’s motor became tangled in a fishing line. Amid deteriorating weather and rough water, the boat capsized. Tragically, both his brother and cousin drowned in the icy waters, leaving the teen alone atop the capsized vessel. CBS News+ 3The Rescue: The boat was reported overdue when it failed to return as scheduled. Although search efforts were initially delayed due to poor visibility and harsh weather, a U.S. Coast Guard aircrew spotted the teen sitting on top of the overturned hull about four miles off the coast of St. Lawrence Island. The Guardian+ 1Responders dropped a life raft and survival equipment down to him while coordinating with a nearby “Good Samaritan” vessel, the motor vessel Northwest Explorer. Crew members from the Northwest Explorer pulled the teen aboard, where he was treated for severe hypothermia. The bodies of the two deceased family members were also recovered, and the vessel transported the survivor and the victims to Nome, Alaska. The Guardian+ 1
