On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on his home country during his traditional noon blessing from St. Peter’s Square. Addressing the faithful, the Chicago-born pontiff invited everyone to pray for peace, noting that the memory of the tragic events pushes a renewed commitment to peace. He warned that violence in the U.S. and globally is a tragic expression of underlying problems, emphasizing that hatred grows where extreme poverty and injustice persist. Switching to Italian, he urged that peace be pursued first and foremost through prayer, entrusted to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, while remembering the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the 2001 attacks.
