Under new regulations announced by Beijing’s municipal government, the possession and storage of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within city limits will be banned starting November 15, 2026.Key details reported from the announcement:
- Scope of the Ban: Residents and visitors will be forbidden from owning, storing, or flying drones anywhere in Beijing’s airspace. Transporting drones or drone components into the city will also be strictly prohibited.
- Disposal Deadline and Penalties: All current drone owners must either move their devices outside Beijing or dispose of them by November 15, 2026. Non-compliance will result in fines and the confiscation of devices.
- Government Assistance: To help owners comply, authorities are providing subsidies for scrapping devices, establishing official buy-back channels, and offering free shipping to send drones out of the capital.
- Escalation of Previous Rules: In May, Beijing had banned drone sales and required mandatory registration while still permitting private ownership. The new rules eliminate ownership entirely for the general public.
- Exemptions: Authorized exceptions may be granted for specific operational needs, including disaster relief, counter-terrorism, agriculture, and scientific research.
- Security Rationale: Officials cited the need to “safeguard the security of the capital.” Heightened airspace safety concerns followed an incident in June where a small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people.
