According to the report from CBS News, the Kennedy Center’s boardchaired by Donald Trump and made up of his Cabinet members and political alliesvoted to immediately close the performing arts center for renovations.Key details reported in the story include:

• Reason for the Vote: Trump and allied board members pushed for the immediate closure by arguing that the center faces serious physical deterioration and financial struggles, warning it was in a “financial and structural death spiral.” Congress had previously approved $250 million for a renovation project.
• Legal Battle Over Renaming: The closure vote came just hours after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper issued a ruling blocking the board from adding Trump’s name to the building facade. In August, the board had voted to add an inscription reading “Renovated and Restored by President Donald J. Trump.” Judge Cooper ruled that the board cannot install memorials for Trump or anyone else without explicit authorization from Congress.
• Prior Name Dispute: Last December, the board had voted to rename the facility “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts” and mounted his name on the exterior. In May, Judge Cooper ruled that addition illegal and ordered Trump’s name removed, leaving the exterior wall covered by a tarp-shielded scaffold.
• Renovation Conditions: Following Tuesday’s vote, Trump stated on Truth Social that actual construction will not begin until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit rules on the Justice Department’s appeal regarding his name on the building. Trump stated that if the courts rule against allowing his name and the Supreme Court does not overturn the decision, the renovation will not take place at all. He also claimed to have raised $17 million in private donations to help support the center in the interim, though the source and handling of those funds were not disclosed.
