The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is implementing two extended 83-hour weekend closures on Interstate 70 in Wheat Ridge (west metro Denver) to carry out critical repairs on bridges over Kipling Street (CO 391) and Garrison Street.Closure Schedule
  • Westbound I-70: Closes from 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 18, until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 22.
  • Eastbound I-70: Closes from 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 25, until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 29.
  • Weather Contingency: A backup window has been reserved from October 2 to October 6 in case weather or unforeseen conditions cause delays.
Key Traffic Impacts
  • Interstate Traffic Rerouting: Through traffic on I-70 will be diverted off the highway and through the Kipling Street interchange off- and on-ramps before merging back onto I-70.
  • No Access to or from Kipling Street: Because the ramps will serve as temporary through-lanes, drivers cannot exit I-70 onto Kipling Street or enter I-70 from Kipling Street.
  • Kipling Street Fully Closed: Kipling Street will be completely closed to both northbound and southbound traffic directly under the I-70 interchange.
  • Adjacent Ramp Closures:
    • During the westbound closure: The Wadsworth Boulevard on-ramps to westbound I-70 will be closed.
    • During the eastbound closure: The Ward Road on-ramp to eastbound I-70 will be closed.
  • Travel Delays: Motorists should anticipate delays of 30 minutes or more through the corridor.
Detour Routes
  • Local Vehicle Detour: Drivers needing to cross or navigate around Kipling Street should follow the posted detour using West 44th Avenue, Ward Road, West 58th Avenue (Ralston Road), and Wadsworth Boulevard.
  • Pedestrians and Bicyclists: A signed detour route will route pedestrians and cyclists around the work zone via Garrison Street and 48th/49th/50th avenues.
Why the Closures Are HappeningCrews from Myers and Sons Construction are completing a $5 million bridge deck rehabilitation project. The work includes hydro-demolition (using high-pressure water jets to remove deteriorated concrete) and pouring new deck surfaces. CDOT scheduled continuous, full-weekend closures around the clock to finish the project faster, minimize repeated nightly disruptions, and protect highway workers.
