Saudi Arabia announced that its air defense forces intercepted and shot down a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi group on the outskirts south of Mecca, before it could enter the restricted airspace over Islam’s holiest city.Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki stated that the drone was intercepted around 6:50 p.m. local time, emphasizing that the security of Mecca and the holy sites represents a strict “red line” and warning of deterrence measures against further attacks. In response, Houthi officials denied the allegation, calling claims of targeting Mecca or religious sites unfounded. The incident follows an escalation in cross-border hostilities, coming amid recent drone and missile strikes directed at several Saudi locations, including Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, alongside reciprocal military strikes and heightened regional tensions in Yemen and surrounding waterways.
