Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning issued a public apology to ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe after facing widespread backlash for laughing during a press conference about an AI-generated, fake video.
The controversy began following Texas’ victory over Ohio State, during which an awkward postgame exchange occurred between Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and Rowe on live television. Shortly after, a manipulated AI video circulated on social media falsely depicting Sarkisian backhanding Rowe across the face.
During his weekly media availability, Manning was asked about social media posts surrounding the game and brought up the fake video himself, calling it “hilarious” and laughing about it along with others in the room. His remarks drew immediate public criticism for joking about violence against a woman and targeting a veteran reporter.
Following the backlash, Manning posted an apology on social media acknowledging that his comment was insensitive and stating that there is nothing funny about violence or the AI-generated video. He specifically apologized to Rowe, expressing deep regret for the hurt his words caused and thanking her for her grace. Rowe publicly accepted his apology, sharing that they had a private conversation about the matter and that they were moving forward with mutual respect and kindness.
