Scientific Report on Glacial Collapse

A new assessment by World Weather Attribution released today found that the devastating collapse on Mount Langtang Lirung was driven by a combination of human-induced climate warming, record late-summer heat, permafrost thaw, and lingering structural fissures from the 2015 earthquake. Officials estimate direct economic and infrastructural damage at $2.7 billion (roughly 6.7% of GDP), strengthening Nepal’s claims for international Loss and Damage climate financing.
