An Agence France-Presse (AFP) photograph captured Donald Trump aboard Air Force One examining a large placard that appeared to reference the demolition of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Key details of the report include:
The Photograph: AFP photojournalist Brendan Smialowski took the picture through a window of Air Force One after it landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, following Trump’s trip to North Carolina. Trump is seen reviewing a large board or printout prominently bearing text that begins with “Kennedy Center DEMOLISH…” (or “Kennedy Center DEMOLITION”).
Trump’s Preceding Remarks: Just hours before the photo was taken, Trump told reporters on the tarmac in North Carolina that the Kennedy Center had been losing millions of dollars and claimed that without his administration’s intervention and fundraising, the performing arts complex would “end up being ripped down.” When asked why his name needed to be placed on the building, he did not respond.
Background and Legal Dispute: The image surfaced amid an ongoing dispute over efforts to add Trump’s name to the federally chartered cultural institution. A federal judge had recently blocked attempts by the center’s board to add Trump’s name without approval from Congress. Following that decision, the board voted to close major portions of the complex for extensive renovations funded by federal appropriations.
