A gym class syllabus at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, has sparked controversy and backlash from parents and legal experts over a requirement that female students disclose personal health details about their menstrual cycles.

The Policy

Under a syllabus section titled “Non-Swim Days for Pool Only,” female students who miss required swimming classes due to their period were instructed to have a parent submit a written note or email specifying the suspected length of their menstrual cycle. According to the syllabus, providing this information was required to make up missed swimming days. If days were not made up or alternative dry-land gym activities were not completed, students faced point deductions and lower participation grades.

Parent and Legal Backlash
  • Privacy Concerns: Parents, led by Andy Amsdillthe father of an enrolled studentspoke out against the policy, calling it an unnecessary and invasive overreach into students’ private medical lives. Amsdill stated that when he raised the issue, school administrators initially offered to excuse only his daughter individually, rather than removing or revising the requirement systematically for all students.

  • Potential Legal Violations: Civil rights attorney Jon Marko noted that the syllabus policy is legally problematic. Requiring female students to surrender sensitive medical details to avoid academic penalties could violate federal Title IX regulations as well as state anti-discrimination statutes, such as Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on sex.

District Response

Following public criticism and media coverage, Lakeview School District Superintendent Karl Paulson issued a statement acknowledging the parent concerns regarding the physical education expectations as the district examined the classroom policy.
