Human remains recovered in the Grand Canyon have been confirmed to be those of 53-year-old Timothy Allen Smith, the final hiker unaccounted for following catastrophic flash flooding in late August.

What Happened
  • The Incident: On August 29, intense rainfall triggered severe flash flooding through the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon, particularly impacting the Bright Angel Creek and Phantom Ranch areas. The deluge washed out trails, damaged park infrastructureincluding the Transcanyon Waterlineand required the rescue or evacuation of more than 80 people.

  • The Victims: Smith, a pilot originally from Granbury, Texas, living in Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming, was on a multi-day hiking and camping trip with two longtime friends: John Giusti (46) and Brent Rosenkranz (42), both from Granbury. All three men lost their lives in the floodwaters. The bodies of Giusti and Rosenkranz were recovered by search crews in early September, while Smith remained missing.

  • Discovery and Confirmation: On September 14, park rangers located human remains downstream along the Colorado River near Crystal Rapids. Following an examination by the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, Smith’s wife, Carrie Smith, announced on social media that the remains were positively identified as her husband, bringing closure to nearly three weeks of intensive search operations conducted by the National Park Service and partner agencies.
