Haftu Strintzos’s story is one of the most remarkable journeys in modern distance running, charting an inspiring path from an impoverished, rural childhood in northern Ethiopia to the pinnacle of Australian athletics.
Early Life in TigrayBorn in the mountainous region of Tigray, Ethiopia, Strintzos spent the earliest years of his childhood working as a young shepherd tending goats and sheep. Living in severe poverty with very limited access to formal schooling or modern infrastructure, daily life demanded immense physical resilience, walking and running across rugged, high-altitude terrain. Following devastating personal circumstances, he was placed in an orphanage in Addis Ababa before being adopted by an Australian-Greek family and moving to Melbourne, Australia, as a young boy.
The Rise Through AthleticsIn Australia, Strintzos discovered and honed his natural talent for distance running. He developed through the Victorian athletics ranks before moving to the United States on a scholarship to compete in NCAA collegiate track and cross-country for Villanova University. During his collegiate and early senior career, he established himself as a fierce competitor across 5,000m, 10,000m, and cross-country, representing Australia at international competitions including the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.
Smashed Australian Marathon RecordStrintzos transitioned to road racing and the marathon distance with extraordinary speed. In July 2026, competing at the Gold Coast Marathon in only his fourth career attempt at the 42.195-kilometer distance, he produced a historic run:
National and Oceania Record: He crossed the finish line in a blistering time of 2:06:20, breaking Andy Buchanan’s previous Australian record (2:06:22) by two seconds.
First Australian Winner in Two Decades: Strintzos became the first Australian man to win the Gold Coast Marathon in 20 years, since Lee Troop in 2006.
Course Record: His performance slashed over a minute off the existing course record, making it the fastest marathon ever run by an Australian on home soil.
Strintzos’s journey from a shepherd in the hills of Tigray to becoming the fastest Australian marathon runner in history is celebrated as an extraordinary testament to grit, opportunity, and athletic determination.
