This article comes from NBC News’ political newsletter and analysis series, “From the Politics Desk.”

In American political terminology, “seeking daylight” refers to lawmakers attempting to create visible distance or establish differences between themselves and another figure or standard party position.

The report focuses on:

1. Creating Distance: A growing effort among certain Republican lawmakers to establish political separation and independence from Donald Trump on key policy matters, rhetoric, and campaign approaches.

2. Electoral Considerations: Concerns among GOP strategists and candidates that closely aligning with Trump’s more controversial statements or polarizing positions presents risks in competitive general elections and moderate swing districts.

3. Strategic Balancing Act: The political tension Republicans face between needing to motivate the loyal Trump-aligned base while simultaneously demonstrating independence to appeal to suburban and independent voters.

4. Policy and Leadership Divergence: Specific areas where congressional Republicans have pushed back or voiced differing priorities, aiming to define the party’s platform beyond Trump’s personal brand and grievances.
