In a 30-second campaign advertisement ahead of the midterm elections, Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar publicly challenged Donald Trump over his administration’s immigration enforcement policies. Representing Florida’s 27th Congressional Districta heavily Hispanic district in the Miami areaSalazar warned that some enforcement actions have “gone too far.” In the ad, she pointed out that half of the 50,000 individuals detained in July had no criminal records, cautioning Trump that Hispanic voters who supported his return to the White House feel betrayed. She urged him to pursue a different path, saying he could do for immigration what Abraham Lincoln did for slavery or Ronald Reagan for communism by granting long-term undocumented residents a dignified legal status rather than blanket amnesty.
Political science professor Sean Foreman of Barry University noted that it is very rare for a sitting member of Congress to openly criticize a president from their own party, particularly one who previously endorsed her. According to Foreman, Salazar’s move appears designed to win over moderate and independent voters in South Florida who are upset by strict enforcement measures, such as the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans and Haitians. However, the strategy carries political risks given Trump’s track record of pushing back against Republican critics. Meanwhile, her Democratic challenger, former news anchor Eliott Rodriguez, dismissed the ad as political posturing, arguing that her past voting record aligns with Trump’s broader immigration agenda.
