The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) and its ousted board members filed an emergency motion in federal court asking a judge to block the Trump administration from carving President Donald Trump’s name into the stone facade of its headquarters building in Washington, D.C.
The move is part of an ongoing legal battle that began after the administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) targeted the independent, congressionally funded think tank, leading to mass firings and an administrative takeover. Although the Trump administration previously added the president’s name to the building using temporary, bolt-on exterior lettering, lawyers for USIP stated in the filing that they understand a contractor has now been selected to permanently carve his name into the stone structure while litigation over the institute’s independence is still pending.
The legal filing compares the situation to ongoing controversies surrounding the Kennedy Center, where the administration has similarly faced pushback and court orders regarding attempts to add Trump’s name or alter the facility.
