The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a second suspect in connection with the deadly Chelan Hills wildfire that ignited on July 4. The fire started along U.S. Highway 97 near Orondo, Washington, after a group of individuals launched illegal aerial fireworks from the bed of a moving truck. The massive blaze burned nearly 10,000 acres, destroyed over 100 homes and buildings, and resulted in the death of a man and his dogs as they tried to escape the flames.
The second suspect, a 19-year-old from University Place, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. He faces charges including first-degree manslaughter, first-degree arson, first-degree malicious mischief, and multiple counts of third-degree assault related to responding firefighters. This arrest follows the case of 18-year-old Michael Yakimov, who was arrested earlier in the month and pleaded not guilty to the charges on September 17. Law enforcement officials stated that additional arrest warrants have been issued for other suspects involved in the incident as the investigation continues.
