An Australian man named Simon Peter Carman appeared in a Thailand court for the first time on charges of murder and concealment of a body relating to the death of a 17-year-old girl in the eastern tourist city of Pattaya.
Carman was arrested in June at a Bangkok airport before he could board a flight to Australia, shortly after the teenage girl was reported missing and a suitcase containing her body was discovered. Prosecutors formally indicted him on the murder and body concealment charges, as well as two counts of indecent acts on a minor.
During his court appearance in Pattaya to respond to the indictment, Carman denied all the charges. Police investigations, including security footage, indicated the girl was last seen entering a condominium with him, after which he was recorded leaving alone with a large suitcase. Carman claimed during police questioning that he acted in self-defense, alleging the girl threatened him with a knife. He is currently being held at the Pattaya Remand Prison while awaiting a court decision on whether the case will proceed to trial. A conviction for premeditated murder carries a potential death penalty.
