Human remains discovered in the Grand Canyon have been confirmed by his family to be those of Timothy Allen Smith, the final hiker who remained missing following severe flash floods in late August. His recovery brings the total death toll from the disaster to three.

Smith, along with his two backcountry companionsBrent Rosenkranz and John Giusti, whose bodies were recovered earlierwas on a multiday hiking, fishing, and camping trip when sudden torrents swept through the canyon bottom near Phantom Ranch. The flash flooding, triggered by heavy monsoon rains on August 29, severely damaged the area’s infrastructure, including the water pipeline serving the South Rim, and prompted extensive multi-week search and rescue operations that successfully rescued more than 80 people.
