A Minnesota judge set bail for Christian Castro, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer accused of shooting and wounding a Venezuelan man named Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis and subsequently lying to investigators about the circumstances.

During the court appearance, Judge Paul Scoggin set bail at $400,000 without conditions or $200,000 with conditions, which include not fighting extradition if released. Castro was arrested by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on state charges including assault and falsely reporting a crime. Prosecutors stated that Castro shot the 24-year-old victim through the front door of a home during a federal immigration crackdown and falsely claimed he had been attacked with a broom handle and a snow shovel.

The case has been part of a jurisdictional dispute between Minnesota state authorities and the federal administration, with state prosecutors moving to hold him accountable while federal officials and the Department of Homeland Security previously criticized the state’s prosecution as lacking proper jurisdiction. Castro also faces separate federal charges stemming from the same incident.
