The decision follows an independent technical assessment by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) which concluded that the flatwater facility can provide a safe, fair, and consistent field of play. However, the selection has drawn significant global attention and debate because the river is a protected habitat for a population estimated at around 500 crocodiles.
