Belmont Park is reopening following a massive $555 million overhaul and multi-year redevelopment project led by the New York Racing Association, backed significantly by a state loan.
The extensive transformation replaced the historic, aging 1905 grandstand with a much more modern, streamlined five-story building. The new facility downsizes the total structure footprint from roughly 1.25 million square feet down to around 275,000 to 300,000 square feet, significantly increasing open green space and adding modern hospitality, dining, and premium viewing areas. The redesigned venue also features four modernized racing surfacesincluding a traditional dirt track, turf courses, and a new synthetic Tapeta oval meant to support year-round racing.
Alongside the fan-facing improvements, the project invested heavily in upgrading the backstretch community, constructing new dormitories, barns, and recreational spaces to improve the quality of life for backstretch workers.
As the iconic venue reopens, the central question for organizers is whether modern sports fans and casual visitors will show up consistently in the modern entertainment era to embrace the revitalized historic home of the Belmont Stakes.
