A 35-year-old Thompson, Connecticut man, Kyle Carpenter, has been committed to the state’s maximum-security psychiatric facility, Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown, for a period of 45 years following a fatal 2019 domestic double stabbing.
Key Details of the CaseThe Incident (November 13, 2019): Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting that a male relative had been stabbed in the chest inside a Thompson residence. Upon arrival, state troopers detained Kyle Carpenter as he was exiting the home. Inside, officers found an unresponsive 61-year-old male family member, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 55-year-old female family member suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds.
The Verdict: Carpenter faced charges of murder and second-degree assault. Following a court trial in Danielson Superior Court, he was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect (insanity).
The Commitment: A three-judge panel ordered Carpenter to remain under state supervision at Whiting Forensic Hospital for up to 45 years. State officials, including Windham Judicial District State’s Attorney John F. Fahey, indicated that the 45-year commitment ensures ongoing public safety while providing Carpenter with the psychiatric care and supervision required by the state.
