During an episode of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher criticized rapper Macklemore over his recent anti-Israel and Gaza-related remarks, which had led to the rapper being removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour.
Maher brought up a controversy from 2014 when Macklemore performed onstage at the EMP Museum in Seattle wearing a dark wig, beard, and a large prosthetic hooked nosean appearance widely criticized at the time as an antisemitic caricature. Referencing that incident on his show, Maher joked about rising prices, remarking: “Everyone’s paying more. Macklemore had to pay an arm and a leg for a giant fake prosthetic ‘Jew’ nose.”
The report notes that in 2014, Macklemore apologized, claiming the costume was not intended to portray a stereotype and that he had simply assembled random disguise pieces to avoid being recognized.
Maher argued that Macklemore’s onstage political rhetoric regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict relies on false narratives and criticized celebrity “moral confusion,” which he stated helps fuel antisemitism.
