On Friday night around 9:00 p.m., a fatal collision occurred at the intersection of East 14th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan’s East Village:
The Incident: Two teenage girls were riding together on a single electric Citi Bike when they were struck by a large commercial truck (a Peterbilt vehicle) driven by a 57-year-old man making a turn from 14th Street onto First Avenue.
The Victims:
A 15-year-old passenger, identified as Daria Serkov, suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead after being rushed to Bellevue Hospital.
A 16-year-old girl operating the bicycle was also taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition with leg injuries. (Initial reports listed her age as 13 before police issued an update).
Investigation: The truck driver stayed at the scene following the crash. The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is reviewing traffic camera footage, right-of-way circumstances, and the specific dynamics of the turn as part of their ongoing investigation.
