Incident Overview Early Saturday, September 19, 2026, an 18-year-old freshman football player at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Marvins Antoine, was fatally stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island. A second freshman teammate, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was also stabbed and injured.
What Happened The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant on Charles Street, across from the Mezzo Lounge (also referred to as Mezza Lounge). Several UMass Dartmouth football players had been at the venue earlier in the night. According to police, an altercation initially broke out while waiting in line and subsequently moved into the nearby parking lot.
Marvins Antoine suffered fatal stab wounds to his chest. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Antoine was a Boston native and graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, who had just started his college career weeks earlier as a running back.
Kensley Macean, a defensive back from Dighton, Massachusetts, sustained stab wounds to his head, neck, and arm. His injuries were treated at Rhode Island Hospital and determined to be non-life-threatening.
The Suspect and Arrest Providence police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, who is also a student at UMass Dartmouth but not a member of the football team.
Investigators utilized automated license plate readers (Flock cameras) to trace the vehicle used to leave the scene back to the university’s campus in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Eze was taken into custody on campus by the UMass Dartmouth Police Department. He faces a murder charge and is being held pending extradition to Rhode Island.
University and Police Reaction Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez stated that evidence indicates the parties involved did not know each other prior to the encounter.
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark A. Fuller issued a statement expressing grief and offering condolences to Antoine’s family and teammates, while confirming that counseling and support services have been made available across campus. The university noted there was no ongoing threat to the campus community.
