Early Saturday, September 19, 2026, 18-year-old Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team, was fatally stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island. Another player, 19-year-old freshman defensive back Kensley Macean, was injured in the incident.
Key Details of the Incident:
Location & Timing: The stabbing took place shortly after midnight in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant across the street from the Mezzo Lounge nightclub in Providence. Several players had gone to the club following a Friday night game against Framingham State.
The Altercation: According to Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez, a dispute broke out while waiting in line at the nightclub involving a female and some of the victims. The confrontation moved across the street to the parking lot. Police noted there was no indication that the individuals knew each other beforehand.
Casualties: Antoine was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died from stab wounds to the chest. Macean suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds to his head, neck, and left arm.
Suspect Arrested: Police arrested 19-year-old Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, who is also a student at UMass Dartmouth but not a member of the football team. Investigators used local license plate reader cameras (Flock cameras) to trace his vehicle back to the campus in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where he was taken into custody to face murder charges in Rhode Island.
Reactions: UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller expressed deep sorrow and condolences to Antoine’s family and teammates, while friends and former high school teammates remembered Antoinea graduate of Durfee High School in Fall Riveras a dedicated leader, role model, and aspiring NFL player.
