On Friday evening, a natural gas leak prompted the precautionary evacuation of hundreds of residents from the Alexan Riveredge Apartments, a five-story, 325-unit complex located on Turtle Creek Boulevard near the Trinity River in Dallas.

Key Details of the Incident:
  • The Leak: Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) was dispatched shortly before 7:30 p.m. after Atmos Energy crews detected an outdoor gas leak. Atmos workers were on site conducting an inspection following a minor kitchen fire that had occurred in a fourth-floor unit earlier that afternoon around 3:00 p.m. DFR stated the kitchen fire was extinguished quickly with no injuries and is not believed to be connected to the gas leak.

  • The Evacuation: Although gas monitoring equipment found no elevated gas readings inside the building, emergency officials ordered a full evacuation of the complexwhich was approximately 90% occupiedout of an abundance of caution.

  • Emergency Response: Power to the building was temporarily shut off while Atmos Energy worked to isolate and repair the line. The City of Dallas Department of Emergency Management and Crisis Response assisted on scene, and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) dispatched air-conditioned buses to provide displaced tenants with a safe, cool place to stay while crews completed repairs. No injuries were reported.
