According to the report from The Denver Post, a driverless Waymo robotaxi drove into the South Pearl Street Farmers Market in Denver on Sunday, September 20, disrupting the pedestrian-only event.

The South Pearl Street Farmers Market, held weekly along South Pearl Street, closes off the roadway to vehicular traffic to accommodate dozens of local vendors, tents, and crowds of shoppers. During Sunday morning’s market, an autonomous, unoccupied Waymo vehicle mistakenly navigated past street closure barriers or into the restricted pedestrian zone, creating confusion and concern among attendees and vendors. Market organizers and bystanders had to intervene to manage the vehicle, which was moving at low speeds, until it could be safely stopped or redirected away from the foot-traffic area.

The incident occurred shortly after Waymo expanded its commercial autonomous ride operations to the public across Denver earlier in September. The mishap has drawn scrutiny from local residents and city officials regarding how autonomous vehicles recognize temporary street closures, event barricades, and crowded pedestrian zones.
