Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was hospitalized after being struck in the face by a foul ball during Sunday’s 9-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds. The incident occurred in the top of the fourth inning while Bregman was waiting in the on-deck circle. His teammate, Michael Busch, chopped a foul ball into the dirt near home plate, which bounced up and hit Bregman directly on the left side of his face.
According to Cubs manager Craig Counsell, the impact caused a cheekbone laceration, a nosebleed, and significant swelling. Bregman was immediately escorted to the clubhouse and then transported to a local Cincinnati hospital to undergo CT scans and X-rays to check for potential orbital and cheek fractures.
Later on Sunday, Bregman posted an update on his Instagram. Despite showing a swollen-shut left eye and a plugged nose, he reassured fans by stating, “Thanks for the messages y’all. I’ll be back.” Medical staff cleared him to travel back to Chicago with the team that night.
If Bregman misses extended time, it could significantly impact the Cubs, as they are currently competing in a tight National League Wild Card race with just one week left in the regular season.
