Authorities in Placer County, California, launched a manhunt for an armed and dangerous suspect connected to a homicide and confrontations with law enforcement.

Key Details of the Incident:

  • The Suspect: The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 44-year-old Derek Spencer from the greater Sacramento area. He was already wanted for multiple felonies, including pointing a firearm at victims earlier in the day and an alleged carjacking in El Dorado County.

  • Ramming and Shooting: While deputies searched for Spencer, he rammed a stolen vehicle into a sheriff’s patrol vehicle and fled.

  • The Homicide: When tactical teams cleared a home where Spencer had been earlier, they found an adult woman dead from gunshot wounds inside. Investigators believe Spencer murdered her before fleeing into the nearby woods.

  • Shots at Law Enforcement: As law enforcement tracked him, Spencer allegedly opened fire on officers and law enforcement helicopters. No deputies were reported injured.

  • Search Area and Warnings: The manhunt has centered around Iowa Hill Road, south of Colfax, in steep, heavily wooded, and rugged terrain. Residents in the area were warned to lock their doors and shelter in place. Firefighting efforts for a nearby small timber fire were also held off and kept on standby due to the proximity of the active shooter situation.
