A major fire broke out at the Grand Burstin Hotel on Marine Parade in Folkestone, Kent, leading to arrests and large-scale evacuations:

  • The Incident: Emergency services were called to the seaside hotel shortly after 1:00 am on Saturday, 19 September. At the height of the blaze, Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed 26 fire engines and specialist units to bring the fire under control. The flames are believed to have originated in the basement of the 550-room seafront building.

  • Evacuations: Around 280 guests and staff were safely evacuated from the hotel, with Folkestone and Hythe District Council coordinating a temporary rest centre. Later on Saturday evening, an additional 90 residents from nearby Pavilion Court on Marine Terrace were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to structural safety concerns. No injuries have been reported.

  • Arrests and Police Investigation: Kent Police are treating the fire as suspicious and suspect it may have been started deliberately. On Sunday, 20 September, officers arrested a 38-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both from the local area, in connection with the blaze. Both individuals have since been released while inquiries continue.

  • Current Situation: Road closures remain in effect around the harbour area while emergency services continue their investigation. Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV, or information regarding the incident to come forward.
