President Trump announced a ban on CNN, along with two other outlets, from White House access, citing what he called fake news reporting. CNN was next in the rotation to provide the shared television pool coverage that the five major networks use for presidential events when space is limited. The White House prevented CNN from carrying out those duties. In response, the networks that make up the television poolincluding Fox Newsissued a joint statement that no administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting. They announced they would not cover events designated as pool coverage of the president and would not put a replacement pool in place. Other pool coverage, such as events involving Congress, would continue as usual. The decision means there is no rotating network camera crew providing shared video of the president’s designated pool events, including travel connected to the United Nations gathering. The White House continues to produce its own video feed. The banned outlets have filed a lawsuit arguing the restrictions violate press freedoms. The development has drawn widespread attention because it represents an unusual show of solidarity across competing networks.
