Here are the key details regarding the news about Illinois Governor JB Pritzker:
Diabetes Diagnosis & Health Wake-Up Call: Governor Pritzker publicly disclosed that he was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and subsequently Type 2 diabetes two years ago at age 58. Initially prescribed insulin, the diagnosis served as a serious wake-up call regarding his long-term health and family longevity, especially given his family history (his father died of a heart attack at age 39).
80-Pound Weight Loss on GLP-1: Following medical advice, he began taking a GLP-1 medication to regulate his blood sugar. Combined with diet and daily exercisesuch as walking four miles along Lake Michigan, hiking, and using gym equipmenthe has lost 80 pounds and plans to lose more.
Health Improvements: Pritzker described the drug as “life-changing,” noting that it quieted constant “food noise” and cravings. Because his blood sugar normalized, he was able to stop taking insulin entirely about nine months ago.
Public & Political Context: Pritzker addressed his lifelong struggle with obesity, noting that his weight had often been targeted with jabs by political opponents, including Donald Trump. He dismissed the idea that using a GLP-1 is a shortcut or “steroids for sports figures,” emphasizing it as a vital medical tool. When asked if the transformation was aimed at reshaping his profile ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid, he kept his focus on his current duties and health.
State Healthcare Policy: Pritzker highlighted Illinois’ state employee insurance coverage for GLP-1 drugs, arguing that preventative care and treating metabolic conditions ultimately save taxpayers money by helping patients avoid complications and come off expensive treatments like insulin, though he noted budget considerations remain ongoing.
