An armed murder suspect was shot and killed by Placer County sheriff’s deputies early Monday morning following an overnight manhunt and shootout in the rugged, forested terrain near Iowa Hill, California.
Key Details of the Incident:The Suspect: The deceased suspect was identified as 44-year-old Derek Spencer, who was wanted for several felony offenses and had been arrested multiple times earlier in the month for charges including burglary, vehicle theft, and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
The Initial Confrontation: On Sunday, deputies encountered Spencer in the Iowa Hill area (east of Colfax). During the encounter, Spencer allegedly rammed a patrol vehicle with his car, fired gunshots at law enforcement personnel and police helicopters, and fled into the woods.
Discovery of a Victim: While tactical teams were clearing a residence where Spencer was known to have stayed earlier, they discovered the body of a deceased woman, identified as Cheryl Macy, who had died of gunshot wounds. Investigators determined Spencer likely killed her before fleeing into the surrounding forest.
The Manhunt and Standoff: The Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Multiple regional agenciesincluding tactical units from El Dorado and Nevada counties, local police departments, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) aircraftjoined the search. Spencer allegedly ignited brush fires during the standoff, later designated as the Mineral Fire.
The Shootout: Using infrared thermal imaging from a CHP aircraft, search teams pinpointed Spencer hiding in steep, heavy brush in the canyon. Around 4:00 a.m. Monday, as tactical teams closed in, Spencer fired on the officers. Deputies returned fire, fatally shooting him at the scene. No law enforcement officers were reported injured.
