In the Supreme Court trial regarding the February 2024 deaths of former television presenter Jesse Baird and his partner, Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies, former New South Wales police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, with his defence team arguing that he acted in self-defence.

Key details from the court proceedings:

The Defence’s Account Lamarre-Condon’s defence barrister told the jury that a physical struggle took place over the firearm inside the Paddington home. According to the defence, after Baird was shot, the gun was flung across the room and picked up by Davies. The defence argued that Lamarre-Condon then grabbed Davies’s arm to push the weapon away from himself and back toward Davies, during which Davies was fatally shot in an accidental discharge. The defence stated that Lamarre-Condon’s subsequent attempts to hide the bodies and flee were the result of “understandable panic” because he realized how damaging the scene would appear to investigators.

The Prosecution’s Case Crown prosecutors presented a contrasting narrative, describing the killings as premeditated and driven by an “obsessive and jealous infatuation” following Baird’s decision to end a brief casual relationship with Lamarre-Condon in late 2023. Prosecutors alleged that Lamarre-Condon had engaged in escalating stalking behavior, stole a key to Baird’s home, and entered the Paddington terrace wearing a motorcycle helmet in the guise of a delivery driver. The prosecution told the court that Lamarre-Condon used his police-issued service firearm to shoot Baird twice in the kitchen before shooting Davies, who was in a bedroom attempting to dial Australia’s emergency services (Triple Zero).

The prosecution also detailed evidence of audio recordings capturing the gunshots, an alleged confession Lamarre-Condon made to an acquaintance, and his efforts to dispose of the victims’ bodies in surfboard bags weighted down near Goulburn and Bungonia before eventually turning himself in days later.

The jury trial is scheduled to run for up to 12 weeks before Justice Natalie Adams.
