A 47-year-old Texas man named Jeremy Porter has been charged with capital murder following a roadway shooting in northwest Harris County that killed a 5-year-old girl named Zah’Layah Walter.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when the victim’s mother, Monica Hicks, was driving her five children home from her mother’s house. An individual opened fire on their vehicle multiple times on Grant Road near Jones Road. Zah’Layah, who was sitting in the back seat, was struck by a bullet and later pronounced dead at a hospital, while two of her siblings sustained minor injuries from shattered glass.

Investigators arrested Porter less than 24 hours after the shooting, utilizing evidence that included automated license plate reader cameras to track him down. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail and faces a capital murder charge.
