The Redheugh Bridge over the River Tyne is scheduled to close to all motor traffic for routine maintenance works. Gateshead Council confirmed that the closure will begin at 6 pm on Sunday, September 27, and last until 5 am on Monday, September 28.

The maintenance work will focus primarily on cleaning the bridge’s drainage system. Additionally, teams will make a change to the drainage on the northernmost pier to ensure it functions correctly as part of longer-term works. This process involves removing a “collar” from an underside drain, which will temporarily cause surface water from the bridge deck to fall directly into the river while repairs are carried outa change agreed upon with both the Port of Tyne and the Environment Agency that will not affect water quality.

Signed diversions will be in place, directing motorists to use alternative routes such as the Tyne Bridge or Scotswood Bridge. Drivers have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
