The United States has criticized Australia’s proposed digital regulations that would require social media companies to let users opt out of algorithm-driven content feeds. Washington warned through a submission by the U.S. Embassy in Canberra that the measures could risk facilitating viewpoint-based censorship and encroach on protected speech under the guise of preventing online harm. In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the legislation during a visit to the United States, rejecting claims that it gives the government excessive control.
