• The Incident: Shortly after midnight on January 1, 2019, the 52-foot fishing boat encountered severe weather and began taking on water near Block Island.

• The Crew: Three men were on board: Captain Oscar Diaz, his son Tim Diaz, and nephew John Ansay. Another fishing boat managed to rescue Tim Diaz, but Oscar Diaz and John Ansay went missing. Despite an extensive search covering more than 2,150 nautical miles, neither the two fishermen nor the vessel could be located at the time.

• Location and Identification: The oceanic protection non-profit organization Green Oceans sponsored an investigation to find the vessel. In July 2026, sonar scans identified a potential site 92 feet underwater, located roughly 50 feet from a turbine in the Block Island Wind Farm.

• Diving Assessment: On August 30, 2026, a team of scientific divers inspected and photographed the site, documenting multiple features that matched the description of the F/V Mistress.

• Human Remains: Divers also discovered apparent human remains believed to belong to one of the two missing fishermen.
