The news details a public statement released by Mike Hinrichs, the husband of NHL journalist Jessi Pierce, following the tragic house fire in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, that took the lives of Pierce and their three young childrenHudson (8), Cayden (6), and Avery (4).
Key details from the reporting:
The Statement: Officials shared a statement from Hinrichs at a news conference where state and local fire marshals released findings from their investigation. In the statement, Hinrichs described the tragedy as a “truly unfathomable loss and all-consuming grief” that stays with him every day.
Gratitude to the Community: Hinrichs expressed gratitude to the firefighters, investigators, and first responders, as well as the broader community and hockey world for their overwhelming compassion and sympathy during such a dark time.
Remembering Jessi: He highlighted his wife’s priorities, noting that family always came first for Jessi, with hockey running a close second. Pierce covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com and co-hosted the “Bardown Beauties” podcast. To honor her legacy, the Minnesota Wild announced the Jessi Pierce Community Cup, a youth hockey tournament scheduled for December that benefits women pursuing careers in sports media.
Investigation Findings: Officials ruled the early morning fire accidental. The State Fire Marshal determined that it originated from overheated electrical equipment connected via an ungrounded extension cord running to a room without its own wall outlet. Investigative models showed the smoke alarm sounded about four minutes after ignition, leaving the family approximately one minute to escape, with smoke and heat blocking their primary exit. Hinrichs was away on a work trip when the fire occurred.
