(Barış Alper) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?

Barış Alper Yılmaz, Galatasaray and the Turkey national team winger, is trending today because of his display in Turkey’s Nations League match against France. Turkey lost 0-1 and he played a large portion of the game. The conversation centers on two connected points. First, many observers felt he contributed little: few successful actions, limited impact going forward, and no goal or assist. Second, coach Vincenzo Montella kept him on the pitch while substituting other attackers, notably Can Uzun, which drew sharp criticism. Comments focused on the idea that he has been one of the squad’s least effective players this season and that the coaching staff continues to persist with him anyway. This latest reaction sits on top of a quieter start to the new club season. After a high-output previous campaign, he has so far gone without a league goal or assist, leading to discussion about his form, possible positional changes, and whether he still belongs in the starting XI for either club or country. The France match simply brought those existing doubts into the spotlight on a high-profile night.
