New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell resigned from office following demands from Governor Mikie Sherrill after the release of an independent investigation detailing sexual harassment and ethics violations.

Key Details of the Story:

• The Investigation and Allegations: The inquiry, conducted by the law firm Lowenstein Sandler, substantiated allegations that Caldwell engaged in repeated ethical lapses and behavior amounting to sexual harassment. Among the findings, investigators reported that Caldwell made unwanted romantic advances toward a female staffer’s friend and subsequently made demeaning remarks regarding women. The report also found that he improperly advocated for a promotion for a state employee with whom he had an undisclosed romantic relationship and brought personal guests to ticketed events without authorization or reimbursement.

• Governor Sherrill’s Response: Governor Mikie Sherrill called for his immediate resignation, stating that the findings reflected a pattern of conduct inconsistent with the administration’s standards and emphasizing an effort to end Trenton’s longstanding culture of ignoring misconduct. Sherrill announced that New Jersey Acting Comptroller Shirley Emehelu would take over the duties as acting lieutenant governor.

• Caldwell’s Position: Caldwell submitted his resignation while disputing the investigation’s legitimacy through his legal counsel, claiming the probe was one-sided, deprived him of due process, and lacked an opportunity to present witnesses in his defense.

• Impact on State Governance: In New Jersey, the lieutenant governor also serves as the secretary of state, overseeing the state’s election administration. With upcoming midterm elections, replacing the position promptly was a major priority for the administration.
